WALKING TO ROME

For many centuries it was the custom for an artist in the Low-Countries who had finished their apprenticeship, if the funds and time allowed them, to travel to Rome and study the old masters in person. Since as early as 1510 many artists have gone on these journeys and in this project I am walking in their footsteps. Tracing the path someone similar to me would have taken back then and how much of these roads would still be passable today?

This project is heavily based on the research and study of old maps and roads. The final route when completed will take me from The Hague (NL), the place where I finished my Bachelor in Fine Arts, past the towns of my ancestors, into southern Germany and beyond the Alps where I lived for a while. A total journey of 2000 km by foot.

FOLLOWING THE RHINE

Growing up in the Netherlands I was made aware of the water surrounding us at a young age. The dangers it harbors, the life it can give, and the deep gorges it has cut in our heritage. When I moved to Switzerland the source of the Rhine river, I traveled the length of it’s silvery veins uncountable times. Along it are kilometers of land and settlements that share more then just the water in the river.

This project explores the similarities, differences, history but also possible future along one of the main life sources of the European continent.
